The climate of Switzerland is strongly influenced by the nearby Atlantic. The predominantly westerly winds transport moist and mild maritime air into Switzerland. This air has a cooling effect in summer, a warming effect in winter, and it ensures that there is enough precipitation in most regions throughout the year. The Alps thereby act as a pronounced climate barrier between Northern and Southern Switzerland. Southern Switzerland, which is mainly influenced by the Mediterranean Sea, is characterized by much milder winters than Northern Switzerland.

Bern's climate is considered temperate. Bern’s climate is characterized by long and chilly winters and typically warm and quite warm summers. Bern’s winter season commences in November finally ending somewhere near mid-March retaining a somewhat severe weather type throughout. Bern weather’s disposition during the long winter season stems mainly by the city’s exposure to the cold winds blowing from the snowy Alps. Spells of frosty weather occasionally force night time temperatures in blowing the capital of the Swiss canton of the same name to fall to -2°C / 28°F, although rarely lower.  Between June and August Bern experiences its finest weather with daytime averages of between 22°C / 72°F and 23°C / 73°F. However on the occasion when sunshine becomes stronger, temperatures tend to rise accordingly.
